It is not about trying harder. It is about listening differently.
Most of us were taught that growth requires effort.
Push through. Figure it out. Work harder. Do better. Keep moving. And when something felt stuck in our relationships, patterns, or sense of who we are, we turned up the pressure and tried again.
I am guilty of that myself. And it never quite came out the way I was hoping.
There is even a metaphor for this way of living. The salmon swimming upstream. Battling the current. Driven by sheer force of will. But here is what I have discovered after decades of personal work and working with people on real, lasting change: That is the salmon’s nature. It is not ours.
Our nature is something quieter. We are built not to force our way through life but to tune in and listen to the quiet, natural rhythm that flows within us and in life itself. When we stop pushing long enough to truly listen, something opens. Surprises emerge. Unexpected wisdom comes through. Our intuitive nature can take the reins, whether in a relationship, a project, or something weighing heavily on our hearts.
And what makes that kind of deep listening possible? Curiosity.
Curiosity is a wonderful gift we all have the ability to turn toward.
It does not demand that we have the answers. It simply asks us to stay open to the questions:
What is mine to do here?
What else might be possible?
Do I really have to do it that way?
What happens if I surrender?
What is my real concern?
These questions loosen what has been held too tightly for too long. When we become genuinely curious about our patterns, our longings, and our resistance, we stop defending what we already know and start opening to what we have not yet discovered. We move from: “This is just how I am” to “I wonder what else might be true.”
That single shift can change everything.
When we shift into curiosity, we begin to reframe anxiety as possibility rather than threat. Curiosity deepens motivation and releases dopamine, making the process of discovery feel genuinely rewarding. It boosts learning and memory, helping the brain encode and retain new information more easily. And it supports neuroplasticity, keeping us flexible, adaptable, and open to growth. In other words, curiosity does not just make life more interesting. It makes us more capable of living it well.

The Cost of the Supposed To’s
So much of what keeps us from living fully is that we are caught in a loop of expectations that lead to disappointment in ourselves and others, or the constant push to live up to what someone else needs us to be.
We learned early on how life was supposed to go. So we learned to manage our quiet inner voice rather than trust it. When we live primarily by external norms and “supposed to’s,” something in us begins to flatten, what one researcher described as running on under-inflated tires, moving forward without the energy or fulfillment that comes from living in alignment with who we actually are. Curiosity is what begins to re-inflate those tires.
It Begins With Small Moments
What would it look like to bring genuine curiosity into your own life? Not the critical kind that picks everything apart. Not the anxious kind that spirals. But the warm, open, genuinely wondering kind.
It begins with small moments. Noticing when something shifts inside you, a sense of ease, a quiet opening, and getting curious about the how and the what. What helped that shift in awareness? What was present that allowed something to move? Learning to relate to your inner world as a landscape worth exploring changes everything about how you grow.
Curiosity will actually guide you where you need to go.
It will keep you honest, aligning you with your own authenticity in ways that effort and willpower simply cannot. You will be able to stay in relationship with the part of yourself that knows there is more — more clarity, more meaning, more of what it feels like to be fully and truly you.
And the more you follow that thread, the more it leads you somewhere real.
That may be the most important journey any of us can take.
